Bill ramblings? mostly speculative biology

Running on what I've seen and read in both TBOB, TINAWDC, and Flatland : a romance of many dimensions (So far I havne't finished yet though). It's clear that Bill comes from a world (Euclidea) at least partially inspired by Flatland, but not identical to it. One of the biggest differences is how gender works.

In Flatland, the only two genders are men (shapes) and women (straight lines) that exist in an incredibly rigid and paranoid society. In large part due to the fact women are near invisible at certain angles and running into one can pierce the fragile exoskeleton of other people. We'll get back to the exoskeleton. Meanwhile Bill's parents are both triangles, and the AMA mentions the presense of thousands of genders. That and Bill's father mybe gave birth to him? It's hard to say how seriously to take the Bill Ultrasound but he does specifically say Papa.

According to Journal 3 (I think?), the thing that Fiddleford saw in the portal that scared him so badly was Bill removing his exoskeleton. In TBOB while Bill is trying to replay his world's destruction, one of the words that gets through is 'mandibles'. I think euclideans are some kind of flat arthropod people with eyes that face directly on their sides without the ability to move up or down.

In Flatland, the concept is that since 3D creatures (us) can only percieve the world through 2D images, 2D people perceive the world through only One Demension. They can move and view the world from side to side but never up or down. As a result everyone and everything appear as a featureless straight line. All sensory organs are located on a Flatland person's edges, so they have no possible way to ever percieve the concept of any other direction. Bill himself also vents how his own peers had never even considered the existence of an 'up'.

Bill was born with a vague eye mutation that allowed him to see into the third dimension. Before checking out Flatland, I assumed this was supernatural in some way but I think it's way more simple. I think it's just a random but perfectly mundane genetic mutation that caused his eye to grow in the wrong spot. On his base, facing directly up into the sky instead of to the side.

even his lies are lies

Bill's notoriously dishonest and he's the one who wrote the book! For one thing that baby picture we're all so fond of makes no sense with his established backstory. You know. Given he's clearly standing upright in a 3D environment. The same can obviously be assumed by him stating how loved he was by everybody and getting a 'best baby ever' title.

Chances are he's giving us enough of his tragedy to make him sympathetic, but without giving out the details that he's genuinely insecure about. Or maybe without going against the narrative he uses to cope. I don't agree at all with the interpretation that his parents were unloving, but it's clear his world was against him. If unintentionally.

His mutation would'be been maddening for anyone! Being able to see into an entire dimension of reality that no other person could ever percieve would break anyone. It must have been incredibly isolationg, probably a source of abuse and mockery as well. If you've gone through the gruelling process of decoding page 77 (or googled the answer teehee), you would've seen this poem.

The Doctor says
Three sips a day
Will make the visions
Go away
Fussy eater
Baby billy
Wouldn’t drink
Unless it’s silly
Eye doctor of a different kind
Who wants to make his patient blind
Twisted out of shape after the kill
The ghosts of his family are haunting him still

It definitely adds a more sinister angle (hehe triangle joke) to the silly straw page in the book. He was taken to doctors to be 'fixed' and given medicine to 'blind' him. At first I assumed the medicine would just flatten his ability to see in 3D, but that only really works with the original supernatural interpretation. If his eye was in the wrong place, what could they do other than poison it?

Clearly the medicine wasn't permenant through. If it worked at all. I don't know if Bill lived his childhood and adolecense blind until he was old enough to refuse the medicine, or if it didn't work and he just lived with it.

All we know is that his attempt to show the euclideans the third dimension resulted in their universe's total annihilation, and that Bill isn't as proud about that as he claims to be. Believe it or not Bill, most people don't black out and dissociate when recounting non-traumatic experiences!

Edit: Or hey maybe the blackout was also an "act" for sympathy that doubled back on him again. Because I forgot we have literal word of god confirmation that Bill both feels like shit over all this and that he refuses to acknowledge it. Bill's sob-story is lying about being a lie.

Since this poem doesn'tcome from TBOB or TINAWDC, it's safe to assume it's truthful.

I've been seeing more people on tumblr pull apart Bill's bullshit, and I'm going to start including the ideas I agree with here.

Alex has already confirmed twice that the book is full of red herrings and effectively spelled out what a lot of us already figured out regarding Bill's lies doubling back on him or existing as metaphors.

something about these journal pages seems off

I'd seen a couple of people suggest this but I didn't fully absorb how suspicious these pages were until gin pointed out the artwork of Ford looking too old.

This book was written by Bill. We can't trust it any more than we can trust Bill.

Thankfully, I'm not so sure about TINAWDC. I'm sure it's Bill trying to reach out to us from in-universe like the book. At least I'm fairly sure it's 90% Bill. But some of the cryptic, out of character responses make me think our sleuthing has gotten information he didn't plan for. Like "why did you do it?" and his theruprism files.

Or he's just manipulating us again! For now though I find the website at least slightly more trustworthy than the book.

If Bill was real, I'd chalk everything up to blatant manipulation, false sympathy inducing backstories, and nothing-burger lies. But he isn't. We're supposed to figure SOMETHING out in here, so I'm going to keep taking everything in as a half-truth by default.

euclydian language?

One detail I really like that I think might be relevant here is how the TINAWDC codes directly relate to certain information. The colour ciphers (which I'm assuming is the euclydian written language) all reveal information about euclydia, for example. I'm wondering if that's connected to the source of the information too. I wouldn't be surprised if the colour ciphers are coming from the axolotl telling on Bill, instead of coming from Bill himself.

It has to be one or this other given these a re the only enities that're likely to be able to know this language.

Important to note that the silly straw poem wasn't a colour cipher nor did it come from the website. That poem definitely came from Bill and is worth looking at more critically by default!

Edit while typing this: but the in-book colour ciphers have been solved!

JimBag777 on the discord has solved the colour cipher! Here is the solved key, missing 4 letters (F, Q, Y and Z). Solving the page with the bloody hand reads: "THE AXOLOTL THINKS HES WON, BUT CIPHERS GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN"

The page with the 1-800-555-CIPHER5 phone number also has a colour cipher below it, which translates to: "HE NEVER SLEEPS HE NEVER DREAMS BUT SOMEHOW STILL HE HEARS THEIR SCREAMS" (Technically it's 'scremas' instead of 'screams', slight typo, but I'll cut Alex some slack).

scorpion-halo note: This is less concrete and leans into my theory of the axolotl chiming in to tell on him from time to time.

On the page with the alternate covers, where bill is contemplating his design choices, the top-left features the word "IRREGULAR" in this colour cipher.

scorpion-halo note: in Flatland, irregularities were what people who didn't physically fit into society's rigid expectations were referred to as. They were the lowest class in society and were often subjected to agonising and potentially deadly corrective medical procedures as children.

The last one we noticed was, exclusively in the Portuguese version (Maybe others, not sure) there is a colour cipher at the very bottom of the Stanley punch page, which translates to: "SANTA CAVALINHA" which, when translated into English, means "Holy Mackerel"! What a find!

let's pivot back for a bit. don't Ford ond Bill's backstories sound kind of similar?

OKAY OKAY so I've heard plenty of people piece together roughly the same or similar interpretations of Bill's past. But for some reason the fact that this backstory seems to perfectly reflect Stanford's own hasn't seemingly come up?

Stanford was born with a genetic mutation that made him feel like a freak compared to his peers. He never fit in and was bullied for it. Thankfully though, while Bill's family allowed the doctors to attempt to change Bill, Ford had Stanley. Stan protected him and provided him with reinforcement through most of their joint childhoods. Until Stan was gone. And Ford was completely and utterly alone in Gravity Falls (it was already too late when Fiddelford had shown up). Desperate to be appreciated by the world, he began to unknowingly bring about the end of it.

Obviously all of this was because Bill was lying and manipulating him. But the fact that his societal rejection lead him into Bill's grasp is enough to illustrate my point. He would've accidentally killed humanity if some ghosts hadn't warned him against it. And it's not like Bill killed the euclideans on purpose himself. It was a genuine accident while trying to achieve the exact same thing Ford wanted!

They're also both just massively selfish, self-obsessed and dramatic. Have you seen how Ford draws himself exiting the port?

I dunno, I find it really interesting how similar their stories are. Maybe that's why Bill became so attached to Ford longterm compared to his usual victims. Maybe he could've found genuine understanding if he wasn't millions of years too far gone at this point. Or if he'd stopped to reflect on himself and the futility of his motives (he'd just end up erasing a third universe and getting trapped all over again in an endless loop).

Instead he put his ex-boyfriend in both a psychological and very physical torment nexus. As all well-adjusted geometry does.

The biggest difference I see between Ford and Bill's spiralling destruction is that at a certain point, Ford accepts responsibility. He hurts people on the way, but when faced with the evidence of his mistakes, he'll try to fix it. Bill would rather make shit up and double down until the literal heat-death of the universe.

So when is someone going to go out and shake that statue's hand? It's what the book has been begging us to do the entire time! Come on! I wanna see if Alex Hirsch has anything planned for that! Maybe there's even a physical clue left at Bill's grave that'll reveal something.
